Hello,
I am having some file renaming issues. I am running Windows 10 1809. Obviously, I use Advanced Renamer quite often to rename large groups of files. I usually include an upper or lower case letter change in the name. I noticed today that some of my file names had lower case letters in places they weren't supposed to. I tried to rerun AR to fix these files, but the output stayed the same. I then went into Windows Explorer and tried to manually change the name of a file. The file would not rename when only changing letter case (ex. file.mkv to File.mkv). I could edit a file to another name (ex. file.mkv to file1.mkv) but not change the letter case. I have tried several different file types, several directories, different drives and it will not let me change the case on any file name on any of my files. I am the administrator on my system. I can delete, copy, move, change the file name completely on any file, but no letter case changes. I have restarted the system, read windows support issues, etc., to no avail. Now I know that this isn't necessarily an AR issue, but I'm at my wits end trying to figure it out. I figure someone with some knowledge with Windows might be able to help me. The only thing that makes me think it could be connected to AR is that I wasn't having this issue until this morning after I ran a batch of files and but had messed up and did an undo. After I ran the 'undo previous batch' is when I noticed the issue of not being able to rename letter cases. I don't even know if this is something AR could possibly cause. Please, if you can, give me some assistance. Thanks! |

This is a known Windows problem going back several versions - try running your enquiry using Google.
The underlying issue is that Windows filenames are not case sensitive - but this does not usually lead to your problem. There are various scenarios with different fixes reported but if all else fails you can always rename your files by adding a character to the beginning at the same time as changing the capitalization and then removing the unwanted character from all your files in a separate pass of Renamer. |

Thank you for the reply! I did just what you said to rename a batch by just adding a '-' to file names where I only need to change letter cases. I then ran the files through a second batch to remove the added symbol and fix the letter cases. This is a great work around, but it doesn't help me when I manually edit just a file or two in file explorer. I know letter case isn't a big deal and doesn't cause any real issues. I guess I'm just frustrated that it worked a day before and now doesn't, and it adds an extra step in the process. (I know, first world problems, ha!) I have researched it through google, but it has lead to no solution. Many of the posts, etc. have led to dead ends as they weren't solved or people didn't post a relevant fix. Microsoft support has been no help as well. Their online support chat had someone that seemed to be not very savvy and had me chasing geese. I don't think he quiet understood my problem and I kept having to repeat my issue to him. I noticed it on my desktop and then tried to replicate the problem on my lap top. It works fine on my laptop. I had a friend check if his PC allows him to change case, and his does. Also, my works thin client allows me to change case on file names and it runs Windows 7 Enterprise. I think the mystery of trying to fix it drives crazy as well! Again, thanks for the response and work around. |
