Stock or professional photographers all put their metainfo of a picture in the IPTC tags. When putting a gallery online, the file name should be an intelligible name for the robots, rather than a date, a number or something else that isn't related to the content. The bots cannot "see" images so they have to rely on the filename and the ALT-tag.

It would be a great asset if the title of the image (the IPTC tag "objectname", by convention in the online picture trade) could be added to the "image tags" method.

For instance I have an image of which the IPTC object name (title) is "Duck with stethoscope" named "C100602.jpg" and I like it to be renamed as "C100602-stock-image-of-Duck-with-stethoscope.jpg". This is of enormous importance for SEO and that's how the big stock agencies do it.

Adding this method to AREN would help us a lot. It wouldn't be too complicated since the IPTC tag "copyright" can already be added to the methods.

Thanks a lot!

At the moment I have chosen only to support EXIF meta information. I have been playing around with IPTC some time ago but I was unsure how many pictures were using IPTC meta information. I might look into implementing it again.

There are hundreds of thousand amateur and pro stock photographers around, and let's assume only 1% is interested in doing SEO themselves for their images, it's still a huge number.

One of the rules for good image SEO is changing the title to something meaningful for the robots. This is the image title as contained in the IPTC tag "object name".

I have been looking around for solutions but the only one I found is iMatch. It's messy, expensive, complicated (keeping a database) and it isn't obviously updated any more. They still ask 50$ for it. I wrote Arles image gallery generator (a great program!) to do it, but (1) they don't have an idea what SEO is (sigh) and (2) their next version is only for 2011.

The simplicity, beauty and robustness of Aren is unsurpassed. I keep promoting Aren everywhere, on forums and on my site. It's really the ideal environment to implement this feature.

To repeat: insert/replace somewhere in the file name the content of the IPTC tag "object name" where spaces are replaced by hyphens and all is set lower case. That's what the robots like.

E.g. rename file "DSC_5456.jpg" with object name tag "Girl with headset" to "image-of-girl-with-headset_5456.jpg".
The rule would be
-replace "DSC" by IPTC tag "object name"
-add "image-of-" in front.

Please. :-p

Can you send me a picture with IPTC tags? I would like a real life example to play around with. Then I will look into implementing IPTC support.
You can find my e-mail address by clicking on About in the top menu.

Hello - just checking if IPTC support became available in Advanced Renamer. Can't seem to find it in the documentation but wanted to confirm i'm not missing anything. Thank you.
