renaming batch with increasing number

I haven't done this in a long time, but thought there was a way...........
I need to take multiple images and have them renamed as following numbers
for example

taking 25 images named 1_01, 1_02 1_03 and make them rename their name to 1,2,3,4,5
How do I do this? I can change the extension no problem, but do not know how to make them rename themselves in order by increasing by one number.
