Increment on duplicate file name

I use date time as the file names coming off my digital camera, Is there a way to add an incrementing number only on the files that have duplicate naming, and reset the counter at each new name conflict?

Looks like the setting referenced in this older thread is not longer a setting, so how is this issue solved?
