Renaming Metadata

Is it possible to rename the metadata of files? For instance, I was able to rename the filenames themselves to be the same as the metadata. Then I stripped off some recurring text (the same text, occurring at the beginning of every file). Now I want to actually rename the metadata of the files.

The specific details for what I'm doing is renaming a batch of Apple Lossless files. I want the file names to actually be the titles of the tracks, but since I also edited the file names afterwards to shorter names, and since the titles are what show up when I play the tracks on various players, not the file names, I wanted to be able to rename the titles (metadata) based on the file names.
