ver. 3.94p feedback for Kim Jensen

Hi Kim,

Great job on v3.94p, it solves some long-standing problems I had with earlier versions (with caveats following). I just want you to know that everything I say here comes from a place of utmost respect for you and love for AREN. :)

See below list for configuration.

1. Using the method list button bar at the top of the list, when I click on the "Add Method" button it either 1. does nothing, or 2. causes the whole program window to close. No error message, it just either sits there and does nothing or disappears and shuts down. Cursory testing makes me think that until I add methods to the bare program it does nothing. Once methods are added the program shuts down; further, it shuts down even after all methods are cleared. There may be some interaction with the "Save settings" option as well.

2. When I first open the window, everything looks perfect. The space above the status bar is totally minimized and (with super compact menu) the vast majority of the window is devoted to what I want, namely the method and files lists. After performing some (various) manipulations, the "Last Result" panel appears, which makes about half of the window in the size I normally use it just blank space. Any chance you could make a Settings option to not show that panel? The info could possibly be shown on the status bar, or as a menu item(?). Otherwise all that space that could be devoted to method and files lists just goes to waste in this configuration.

3. Improvements to the dark mode look FANTASTIC! I'm not sure if they were improved in 3.92-3.93, as I haven't been using it since I tried it in the first iteration.


CONFIGURATION: PORTABLE version, with these settings changes from default:

PROGRAM tab: "Add method button bar", "FileInfo Box" & "Show help getting started" OFF
Menu option: "super compact"
ENVIRONMENT tab: "Explorer context menu" & "Associate .aren files..." ON
"Save settings" option: "same folder as aren.exe"
RENAMING tab: "Use zero padding..." is checked
IMAGE FILES tab: "Don't analyze image metadata" checked
MUSIC & VIDEO tab: "Don't analyze music metadata" checked
(I'm pretty sure that's everything)

Everything below applies to that configuration.)

Are you sure you have write permissions for the settings files? I have seen examples of the portable version installed in a way that prevents write access to program setting files. This will result in very odd behavior and random crashes.

Have you noticed that you can change the height of the bottom panel, to make the "Last results" frame smaller? As a side note, the upcoming version 3.95 will have the "Last results" completely redesigned, taken up less vertical space.

I'm using the installed version now and it exhibits the same behavior. All the files in the ...\Appdata\Roaming\Hulubulu\Advanced Renamer 3\ directory have only the archive bit set.

As to the bottom panel height: yes, I keep banging the little two-headed arrow down, hoping I'll penetrate the invisible barrier. :) Never does... Unless you're saying there's some way to *separately* change the last results frame size (but I don't think that's what you mean).

I am not able to reproduce the problem. You are welcome to send me the settings.ini and methods.ini files from the folder ...\Appdata\Roaming\Hulubulu\Advanced Renamer 3\
Then I might be able to find out what is going on.

Ah, interesting. Well, if you don't see it and no one else is seeing it then it's just my stupid computer, and I can live with that. I don't use it anyway, I only tried it in my quest to free up more space for the lists. Since right click works, and you are planning to change the "Last result" frame, I'm happy. I'm sure you have more important things to do.

I just installed (portable) the update to 3.94p. Unfortunately there are two issues.

1. It asks to register every time it's launched now. It used to ask something like one time a day.

I understand wanting people to pay. I just do not have spare money I can afford to part with. I have been saving over a year to get a new pc that's really needed. I'm sure you don't want a life story, so I'll just ask is it necessary to ask every time? Because I usually right click and add to Flash Renamer, which launches Flash Renamer every time, that message now pops up every time.

2. It takes much longer to launch. It was coming up in about two seconds I would say before updating. It was so much longer after updating that I ended up timing it. It now takes a full six seconds to show up.

I'm on a mechanical hd, so I'm guessing it's slower than most people because of that. But in no version before has it taken so long to launch. It's that slow now every time it's launched.
