i have selected All the list and marked all the list and then rightclick, sort by, column, New Filename - but it doesnt seem to sort? 15,000 items, limit set to 100,000 items. I think it sorts by other fields (eg date taken). Any suggestions please?

You will have to run the batch and reload all the filenames. Then sort on the original filename.

Ah, thats a shame - i cant run the batch as I need to exclude some of the list from the batch, and the best way to find the exclusions would have been to sort by proposed New Filename (which is based on flaky TakenOn data for a few hundred of the files. ie Date Taken is not picked up correctly or is picked up differently for a range of different files.

I need the existing filename - which has a decent attempt at the Date Taken - not to be overwritten

Would have saved some time of the option to sort on that field wasnt visible. Thx

Maybe as a wrinkle on David's suggestion you could rename your files to New-Filename@<name> (obviously use something else if any of your names include "@").

That way when you reloaded them the filenames would sort so you could select them en masse but still contain their old name in case you needed to go back to it. Once selected a remove pattern of *@ or @* could be used to get rid of the bit you don't want.

I do agree though that being able to sort the preview on New Filename would be a lot easier.
