Help with renaming files

I was able to setup a command line script that will rename a file then move it to another directory. The issue I have is I am getting files with the same number. I would really just need to the files being moved 1, 2, 3 etc while maintaining the extension. Is there anyway to get the script to remember the last file name used so it doesn't replicate the same name?

Also for some reason the file is being renamed to prefix_(number).txt.txt I need it to be under 8 characters |
